More people should abandon Internet discourse and get into observing/engaging with local politics. I say this not because local politics often offers more meaningful opportunities for effective praxis (although it does), but because local politics often offers just as much highly toxic and entertaining petty drama.
I highly recommend city council meetings. You might make yourself an informed voter and active community member or something. You also might get to watch an ongoing soap opera of old men ready to murder one another over trash collection ordinances, and unlike the Internet, none of them can effectually tell one another to kill themselves no matter how hard and how clearly they are thinking it.
“Last year, Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav made $246.6 million; Disney’s Bob Iger made $45.9 million; and Paramount Global CEO’s Bob Bakish made $32 million. These individuals make more money per year than almost any entertainment executive before them. Just a small portion of each major CEO’s annual salary could cover the cost of the guilds’ reasonable structural and financial demands, and yet, they say it’s not possible. How could that be? Because it’s not about the money. It’s about power and perception. Almost none of these CEOs built the companies they run. We are not negotiating with Jack Warner or Walt Disney. We’re not even negotiating with the people who enriched these companies, like producer Robert Evans at Paramount in the 1970s. These CEOs are basically people who just work there—and who have contracts that allow them very large amounts of money. And right now, they don’t want anyone to know that. They don’t want anyone to know that they don’t actually build anything. They don’t want anyone to see them capitulate and bend the knee to any degree by making a deal with the writers and actors who build the product they fund and distribute. They don’t want to reasonably negotiate with these artists, because they think it will make them look weak. They think it will make them look like chumps, make them look simply like the employees of these companies that they are.”
This is absolutely it. All this crap is about nothing but the perceived power that comes with having a big fat paycheck, and (the fear of) losing face.:/
Think it’d be pretty fun if in s3 of Star Wars Visions (if it happens, hopefully) we get a full-out wuxia episode by Chinese studios. T-pose jumping. Running on walls and rooftops. Beautiful gorgeous scenery. Phenomenal costumes. Dramatic plots involving at least one evil concubine, a scheming eunuch, and a malleable emperor. The worst CGI known to man. There’s so much potential here
I forgot to add: peach blossom trees. One character with a fan who seems delicate and flighty but is secretly extremely dangerous. Lots of coughing out blood for absolutely no reason whatsoever. It’d be amazing
The sequels actually had so much fucking potential and they squandered literally all of it
Even characters like Phasma and Hux! Captain Phasma could’ve been an incredible villain but she was relegated to like 10 minutes total screen time! Armitage Hux was set up as a villain who warns about how unfettered fascism can rise again if we become too complacent! But both were turned into jokes and thrown to the sidelines and served no purpose whatsoever at the end
god it feels like lately we have lost so much progress in terms of movies and tv and gaming actually remembering that people with photosensitivity conditions (epilepsy, migraine, etc) exist and that it’s SO FREAKING EASY to not include effects in your media that will send them straight to hell
we went from early 2000s “we are all petrified of another Pokémon Shock incident so let’s be nice to the people whose brains can’t handle the flashes” to “nearly every movie and tv show has a flashing lights warning crowdsourced on social media and games have been so emboldened to not give a fuck that we had a game with a literal seizure inducing machine built in”. I literally do not get to watch anything on launch day anymore unless I think it’s worth the extremely non zero chance of having up to a week of pain so bad it can make me faint.
what the absolute fuck happened??
I feel guilty for not specifying that I don’t actually have epilepsy. I do however have photosensitive migraine. War Stars episode 9 setting the entire climax on the lightning planet sent me to the dark room pain zone for an entire week and I almost had to go to the emergency room for it though, so I think I do deserve to be part of the “STOP PUTTING FLASHING LIGHTS EVERYWHERE” conversation.
